Riemann Integral in R

Integrability in Riemann

Original Definition

Let f:I→R, be Reimann integrable on I if and only if there:

∃L∈R∀ε>0∃δ>0∀P˙∈℘˙I[∥P˙∥<δ⇒|R(f,P˙)−L|<ε]

L is also called the Reimann integral of f along I, also denoted as: ∫If . The set of Reimann integrable functions is denoted as: RI

Other notation is: lim∥P˙∥→0R(f,P˙)=L .

Theorem: If f∈RI, then the integral is uniquely determined.

Theorem: If f∈RI, and f=g except at finitely many points, then g∈R[a,b] and .

∫If=∫Ig

Theorem: If f∈RI, then f is bounded on I

Cauchy Criterion

Let f:I→R, be Reimann integrable on I if and only if there:

∀ε>0∃δ>0∀P˙,Q˙∈℘˙I[∥P˙∥,∥Q˙∥<δ⇒|R(f,P˙)−R(f,Q˙|<ε]

Squeeze Theorem

Let f:I→R, be Reimann integrable on I if and only if:

∀ε>0∃αε,ωε∈RI(αϵ≤f≤ωε,∫Iωε−αε<ε)

Integrability

Definition

Let f:I→R, is Darboux integrable if and only if L(f)=U(f), and the Darboux Integral of f over I:

∫If=L(f)=U(f)

Integrability Criterion

Let f:I→R, is Darboux integrable if and only if:

∀ε>0∃P∈℘I(U(f,P)−L(f,P)<ε)

Sequential Criterion

Let f:I→R, is Darboux integrable if and only if there exists a sequence of partitions (Pn)⊆℘I such that:

limn→∞U(f;Pn)−L(f;Pn)=0∫If=limn→∞U(f;Pn)=limn→∞L(f;Pn)

Equivalence

If a function is Reimann Integrable if and only if it is Darboux Integrable

General type of Integrable functions: C0(I)⊂RI, and all monotonic functions since they are continuous almost everywhere. RI is an associative commutative algebra over R.

Additivity Theorem

******Let f be integrable in [a,b] if and only if f is integrable in [a,c] and [c,b] for some c∈(a,b), and:

∫abf=∫acf+∫cbf

Corollary: [c,d]⊆[a,b]⟹R[c,d]⊆R[a,b]

Definition: If a<b then:

∫baf=−∫abf, and ∫aaf=0

Algebraic Properties

Suppose that f,g∈RI, and c∈R, then:

  1. cf∈RI, and ∫Icf=c∫If.
  2. f+g∈RI, and ∫I(f+g)=∫If+∫Ig.
  3. If m≤f≤M⟹mμ(I)≤∫If≤Mμ(I), where μ is the Lebesgue measure.
  4. If f≤g on I⟹∫If≤∫Ig.
  5. The function |f|∈RI , and |∫If|≤∫I|f|.

Lebesgue’s Criterion

Let f:[a,b]→R, f∈R[a,b]⟺μ(Df)=0, where μ is the Lebesgue Measure, and Df is the set of all discontinuities of f, or f is continuous almost everywhere on [a,b].

Composition Theorem

Let f∈R[a,b], and f([a,b])⊆[c,d] , where φ∈C0[c,d], then φ∘f∈R[a,b]

Corollary:

If f,g∈RI⟹fg∈RI

Interchange of limit and integral

Integrable limit theorem

Assume that fn⇉f on I, and that each fn∈RI, then f∈RI and that:

limn→∞∫Ifn=∫If

Bounded Convergence Theorem

Assume that fnRightarrowf, and ∃K>0∀n∈N(|fn|≤K), with both , ∀n∈N(fn∈RI),f∈RI, then:

limn→∞∫Ifn=∫If

Theorem

Let gn→g on [a,b] and uniformly on [a,γ] where γ∈(a,b), and gn is uniformly bounded and integrable, then:

limn→∞∫abgn=∫abg

Let f:[a,b]→R be bounded on [a,b] and for any c∈(a,b], f∈R[c,b]. Then, f∈R[a,b] and,

limc→a+∫cbf=∫abf
