Linear Approximation and Differentiability

Directional Derivatives

Def: Let Sn⊆Rn+1 is called the n−sphere, and it is defined as Sn={x∈Rn+1∣∥x∥=1} , and an n−sphere of radius r is defined as: Sn(r)={x∈Rn+1∣∥x∥=r}. If x∈Sn are gonna be denoted as x^.

Def: Let f:S⊆Rn→R, x∈S and and u^∈Sn−1. We say f is differentiable at x and in the direction u^ if, the following limit exists:

limh→0f(x+hu^)−f(x)h

in that case we say that the directional derivative of f at x in the direction u^ is denoted as ∇u^f(x),fu^′(x),Du^f(x),∂u^f(x),∂f∂u^ with their value corresponding to the limit above.

Th: Let f:S⊆Rn→R, x∈S and u^∈Sn−1 if ∂u^f(x) exists then:

limh→0f(x+hu^)=f(x)

Th: Let f,g:S⊆Rn→R,x∈S and u^∈Sn−1 if both ∂u^f(x) and ∂u^g(x) exists then:

∂∂u^(fg)(x)=g(x)∂u^f(x)−f(x)∂u^g(x)g2(x)

Chain Rule: Let f:S⊆Rn→R,x∈S, u^∈Sn−1 and f(S)⊆(a,b). If g:(a,b)⊆R→R is differentiable at f(x) and ∂u^f(x) exists, then ∂u^(g∘f)((x) exists and:

∂u^(g∘f)(x)=g′(f(x))∂u^f(x)

Def: Let a,b∈Rn, then the set [a,b]⊆Rn is defined as:

[a,b]:={ta+(1−t)b∈Rn∣0≤t≤1}

MVT for Directional Derivatives:

Let f:S⊆Rn→R, and a,b∈S where a≠b, u^=(b−a)/∥b−a∥∈Sn−1. If ∂u^f(x) exists for all x∈[a,b], then there’s an t′∈(0,∥b−a∥) such that c=a+t′u^,

f(b)−f(a)=∥b−a∥∂u^f(c)

Def: Let f:S⊆Rn→R, considering the special case of the directional derivative, such that u^∈{ei}i=1n then ∂eif is called the ********************************partial derivative with respect to xi at x0 usually denoted as: ∂xif,∂if,∂f∂xi,fx,fx′,∂∂xif .

MVT for Partial Derivatives:

Let f:S⊆Rn→R, and a,b∈S where a≠b, and b−a=(b−a)ei. For some 1≤i≤n, ∂if(x) exists for all x∈[a,b], then there’s a t′∈(0,|b−a|) such that c=a+t′ei∈[a,b] that

f(b)−f(a)=(b−a)∂if(c)

Total Derivative

Def: For a set D⊆Rn with x0∈D, let Dx0={h∈Rn∣x0+h∈D}.

We will consider the set D as open subset of Rn, to simplify things.

Def: Consider a function f:D⊆Rn→R, where D is an open subset of Rn, and let x∈D. The *************difference function δfx:Dx⊆Rn→Rn is defined by:

δfx(h)=f(x+h)−f(x)

Def: Let g:N⊆Rn→R and g∗:M⊆Rn→R be two functions defined on open domains N and M such that 0∈N∩M. We say that g and g∗ *********************************closely approximate each other near 0∈R if

g(0)=g∗(0) and limh→0g(h)−g∗(h)∥h∥=0

Equivalently, g and g∗ closely approximate each other near 0 if there exists a function η:N∩M⊆Rn→R such that:

Def: A function f:D⊆Rn→R which is defined on an open subset D∈Rn is differentiable at x∈D if the difference function δfx:Dx⊆Rn→R can be closely approximated by a linear function near 0.

Equivalently, f is differentiable at p if there exists a linear function L:Rn→R and a function η:Dp⊆Rn→R such that, given h∈Dp:

f(x+h)−f(x)=L(h)+∥h∥η(h)

and

limh→0η(h)=0

Th: A function f:D⊆Rn→R which is differentiable at x∈D is also continuous there.

Th: Let f:D⊆Rn→R be differentiable at x∈D. Then there sis only one close linear approximation to δfx near 0.

Def: If f:D⊆Rn→R is differentiable at x∈D, then the unique close linear approximation to δfx is denoted by dfx and it is called the differential of f at x.

Th: If f:D⊆Rn→R and x∈D, if f is differentiable at x, then for any u^∈Sn−1 ∂u^f(x) exists, and it is equal to dfx(u^).

Cor: Let f:D⊆Rn→R be differentiable at x∈D. Then:

Th: The function f:D⊆Rn→R is differentiable at x∈D iff:

Th: Let f:D⊆Rn→R, x∈D, r>0 such that Br(x)⊆U. If for any 1≤i≤n, and all y∈Br(x), ∂if(y) exists and is continuous at x. Then, f is differentiable at x.

Th of Pain: Let f:D⊆Rn→R, x∈D, r>0 such that Br(x)⊆U. If for any 1≤i≤n, and all y∈Br(x), ∂if(y) exists and for 2≤i≤n , ∂if is continuous at x. Then, f is differentiable at x.

Def: A function f:D⊆Rn→R, whose partial derivatives exists throughout a neighbourhood of x∈D and are continuous at x, is said to be continuously differentiable at x.

Def: A function f:D⊆Rn→R is said to be continuously differentiable or a C1 function, if it is continuously differentiable at each point x∈D

Euler's Homogeneous Function Theorem

Let f be a homogeneous function of order n, meaning

f(tx)=tnf(x)

Then we get that

∇f(x)⋅x=nf(x)

Tangent Space

Let G⊆Rn be the graph a differentiable function f:D⊆Rn−1→R. For any x0∈D, the set T∈Rn with the equation

xn=f(x0)+dfx0(x−x0)

where x0=(x1,…,xn−1)∈Rn−1. T is called the **************tangent space to G at (x0,f(x0))

Chain Rule

Let g:E⊆R→Rn be defined on an open interval E and let f:D⊆Rn→R be defined on an open set D such that g(E)⊆D. Define F:E⊆R→R to be the composite function given by F(t)=(f∘g)(t)

Suppose that g is differentiable at a∈E and that f is differentiable at g(a)∈D. Then F is differentiable at a a and its differential is given by:

dFa=d(f∘g)a=dfg(a)∘dga

Thus:

JF(a)=Jf∘g(a)=Jf(g(a))Jg(a)

Equivalently:

dFdt=∑k=1n∂f∂xkdxkdt

where the partials are evaluated at g(a) and xk′ is evaluated at a.
