Convergence of Nets

Def: A net on a set X is a function r:Λ→X, where Λ is a directed set. To the point r(λ) is denoted frequently as xλ, and the expression "r:Λ→X is a net" is also written as "(xλ)λ∈Λ is a net".

Obs: Every sequence on X is a net on X.

Def: A point x is called a limit of a net (xλ)λ∈Λ is for every neighbourhood U of x there exists a λ0∈Λ such that xλ∈U for every λ≥λ0, we say that the net (xλ)λ∈Λ converges to x. A net can converge to many points; the set of all limit points of the net (xλ)λ∈Λ is denoted as limλ∈Λxλ.

Def: A point x is called a cluster point of a net (xλ)λ∈Λ if for every neighbourhood U of x and every λ0∈Λ there exists a λ≥λ0 such that xλ∈U.

Def: We say that a net (xσ)σ∈Σ is finer than the net (xλ)λ∈Λ if there is a function ϕ:Σ→Λ with the following properties:

Prop: If x is a cluster point of the net (xσ)σ∈Σ that is finer than the net (xλ)λ∈Λ, then x is a cluster point of (xλ)λ∈Λ. If x is a limit point of the net (xλ)λ∈Λ, then x is also a limit point of every net (xσ)σ∈Σ finer than (xλ)λ∈Λ. If x is a cluster point of the net (xλ)λ∈Λ, then x is a limit point of a net (xσ)σ∈Σ that is finer than (xλ)λ∈Λ.

Prop: Let A be subset of a topological space X. For any x∈X, x∈clX(A) iff there's a net (xλ)λ∈Λ on A that converges to x.

Cor: A set A is closed iff if together with any net it contains its limit points.

Cor: the point x∈Lim(A) iff there exists a net (xλ)λ∈Λ that converges to x, such that xλ∈A, and xλ≠x for all λ∈Λ.

Prop: Let X and Y be topological spaces, and f:X→Y be a function. f is a continuous function iff $$f[\lim_{\lambda \in \Lambda} x_\lambda] \subseteq \lim_{\lambda \in \Lambda} f(x_\lambda)$$for every net (xλ)λ∈Λ in the space X.

Prop: A topological space X is a T2 space iff every net in X has at most one limit.

Th: For every net (xλ)λ∈Λ in a topological space, the family F((xλ)λ∈Λ) consisting of all sets A⊆X with the property that there exists a λ0∈Λ such that xλ∈A whenever λ≥λ0 is f filter in the subspace and limF((xλ)λ∈Λ)=limλ∈Λ0xλ. If the net (xσ)σ∈Σ is finer than the net (xλ)λ∈Λ, then the filter F((xσ)σ∈Σ) is finer than the filter F((xλ)λ∈Λ).

Th: Let F be a filter in a topological space X; let us denote Λ the set of all pairs (x,A), where x∈A∈F and let us define (x1,A1)≤(x2,A2) if A2⊆A1. The set Λ is directed by ≤, and for the net (xλ)λ∈Λ is defined as xλ=x for λ=(x,A)∈Λ, we have that F=F(Λ(F)) and limλ∈Λxλ=limF.

Th: A topological space X is compact iff every net in X has a cluster point.
